    Section A: Questions by Readers

  1. I've found an Error in your pages, or have a problem getting one of the stories, where do I report it?

There's an errors and problems page detailing everything you need to know about that.

  2. I seem to remember a Story that had a XXX in it, or that was about YYY, how can I find it ?

There is a search engine available for just such questions. Also, the Keyword and Species lookup page might help, though not everything is indexed as the Keyword/Species service is relatively new. Also, stories I haven't read yet will not be in this system, unless I could tell in skimming over them what they are about/involve.

  3. I've found an Anthropomorphic Story on the web, how do I get it into your Index ?

Just send me the URL, that's all I really need. Of course, if the author didn't include a short description, and you're feeling up to it, feel free to send those to, as well as hints on what Keywords it might be suitable for, and what Species appear, I'll even credit you by name for the description. Please do not send me the story itself by e-mail.

  4. What IS Anthropomorphics ?

Anthropomorphics (sometimes also called 'furry') usually deals with animals that have been given some form of human attributes such as hands, as well as (usually) human level intelligence. For more about this, have a look at my homepage, especially the second paragraph.

  5. Can you e-mail me story XXX ?

Absolutely not. Please understand, I waste enough of my time maintaining this Index, and I DO actually have a life, so I cannot waste more of it by getting and then mailing off these stories to everyone. Please ask some other furry with a better feed than you have about this.

  6. Where can I find other Anthro' material?

Strange that you ask about this, it's not really that hard to find my homepage and all it's links to just what you're searching for ;-)

  7. Who/what is Miavir anyhow, and how can I get a hold of hir ?

Well, Miavir is my furry alter-ego, and Mia is an anthropomorphic feline from a race of high-tech psionics called the 'Mrxxxx'. For further details, talk to me on FurryMUCK or Furtoonia. You may reach me there, or via e-mail.

  8. I sent you mail telling you about an error, you mailed back to say you'd fixed it, but I still see it in your pages, what's up?

Well, this can be one of two things: For one, you may be loading my pages from your browsers or network proxies cache (under Netscape, press shift while you hit the reload button to ensure a completely fresh copy being loaded). For two, I generate the Index from an internal database, I may have fixed the problem in my internal database, yet not generated a new Index yet (maybe I'm still adding new stories or something). Check the date and time shown at the bottom of all the story pages, and don't worry about it until the time shown there is after the one in my e-mail, THEN send me e-mail about it ;-).

  9. How does the rating system work ?

We give 5 different possible ratings to any story. If the story doesn't have one of these, it basically means none of us have gotten around to (re)reading that story and giving it a new. Here's the meaning of the symbols:

    [Very Good] Very Good
A Story the reviewer REALLY liked. Basically the best of the best.

    [Good] Good
    A story we liked well.

    [OK] OK
A story with it's good and bad points, though still definitely worth finding the time to read.

    [Mediocre] Mediocre
A story that is flawed somehow, either through severe spelling trouble, a patchy or incoherent plot, or seriously deficient writing skills.

    [YUCK] Yuck !
A story that we definitely don't recommend. Widespread flaws, spelling errors and abysmal writing make for stories only kept on this Index because to remove them would be censorship.

Please note that all of the above ratings on any story reflect only the staff's ever so humble opinion, your mileage may vary. The letter just before the rating indicates who gave that particular rating, who belongs to what letter is explained on the Staff Page.

  10. What are those links marked as 'Backup' ?

I keep a list of URL's where stories/homepages may also be found, beside the main URL's in the Index. These are mainly there to enable me to fall back on a secondary link if the main link goes stale, but I've decided to make them available to my readers so they can still find stories when links go stale. I don't maintain backup links with a high priority, so any or all of the Backup links may be stale. If you notice any that are, feel free to drop me an e-mail though.

  11. Did you ever consider making your Index a true archive, with it's own set of stories, so that you don't keep suddenly loosing stories when their site disappears?

I did consider it, in fact, it was one of the first options I considered when originally creating the Index. My thoughts at the time (and they haven't changed much) were:

If I try to create an actual archive, I will need to maintain it, deal with copyright issue (and the e-mail volume that alone would generate is huge), arrange the diskspace with someone, write archiving software and pages, and possibly other tasks I haven't thought of yet. In short, it'd be a major drain on my time and workload to do.
Given that I really do not have the extra time, and in fact, am actually spending less time on MIA'S than I should to keep all the keywords, ratings and species settings getting done moderately quickly, I certainly am not going to try to do that at this point in time. After all, there are plenty of furry archives out there already, why not let them do their share of the work ? ;-)

  12. When will you do the next update ?

I usually wait until I have at least three new stories before I rerun the indexer and do the ftp to the mirror site and all that bother. Once I DO have those three stories though, I'll almost always do an index the same day after processing all the waiting e-mail for more stories. Given how quick I will have those three stories is dependent on the authors, I really have no idea when that'll be, it seems to vary with the tides ;-) Oh, and the 'three story' rule is just a rule of thumb, sometimes I'll do new updates to test modifications in the software.

  13. My god, there's smut on your archive, get rid of it quick!

It is my firm opinion that freedom of speech is not only a right granted by the state you live in, but is one of the basic rights necessary to true freedom, and as such should apply to all things written and said. Even if doing something is illegal, immoral or otherwise frowned upon, writing about it shouldn't be, after all, there is noone who is forcing you to look at such writings, and in the immortal words of Voltaire, 'I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it.' As such, MIA's will accept by policy any and all stories having to do with anthropomorphics, *no matter* what I Miavir happen to think of said story privately, and I will not remove them from the Index unless asked to do so by the author him/her/itself. All stories containing adult matter or themes that I'm aware of have been marked clearly as such, if such offends you and you read them after seeing the classification, you have only yourself to blame. Sometimes, due to my not having read the story or possibly through an oversight, such marking may be missing, feel free to e-mail me about it, and it will be added ASAP.

    And it's not an archive.

  14. Why are there so many spelling mistakes in your text ?

I'm not a native English speaker, gimme a break ;-) I try my best, but my orthography is sometimes sketchy. If there's a mistake that truly bothers you, well, you know what the e-mail address is ;-)

  15. What is the difference between an Archive and an Index, and why does that matter so much to you ?

An archive is an Internet site that makes files available to the WWW. Usually, when I say archive, I mean a public archive, thus, one making it's files available to anyone with an Internet connection and the proper software. An index however is an Internet site that just provides links to other sites and pages on the WWW. You can think of it as the archives being the treasure troves, while the indexes are the treasure maps, they just tell you where to find the treasure, they aren't the treasure themselves (though close and quite worthwhile in their own :-). Unfortunately, the demands in diskspace, bandwidth, and time spent to administer are quite a bit higher for archives than for indexes, I would have a hard time justifying to my employer wasting their diskspace and bandwidth as much as an archive would need, and I plain don't have the time to admin an archive, so MIA'S is and will stay an Index.

  16. Who is running this Index?

Try looking at the Staff Page for the whackos insane enough to try running this loony place :-)

  17. Can you tell me how to reach Author XXX ? I've tried the e-mail address/URL on your page but it's not working.

I maintain all pages with the newest set of e-mail addresses and URL's that I have. So if it's not on the page, don't bother asking, I either don't have it, or can't give it to you by author's request (in which case asking is just as futile), or haven't had time to put it on the page (in which case searching for it in the e-mail pile would take more time than it's worth, just wait until i get around to entering it). So please don't send me mail asking about this or asking to forward an e-mail.

  18. I have one of those stories you mention on the Lost Stories Page. should I mail it to you?

Please don't. If you're not the author, then sending me a story helps me little, as I don't have the right to redistribute it. Instead, please try to contact the author and ask their permission to put it on a server somewhere, then send me just the URL. Please understand that when I say I'm looking for a story, I'm looking for a place on the web to link to, not the story itself (if I found it worthwhile, I probably squirreled away a copy in my private files already anyhow).

Section B: Questions by Authors

  1. I've written an Anthropomorphic Story, how do I get it into your Index ?

Great. Place your story on a public archive site (preferably), or your own Homepage (If you must). Then just e-mail me the URL, that's all I really need. Just to attract a few readers, you probably want to also send me a short descriptive blurb, and maybe hints on what Keywords it might be suitable for, and what Species appear in the leading roles, or at least very often, but none of those are absolutely necessary. If this is the first story of yours to appear in the Index (or you want to change the data), you probably want to also send me your homepage URL, your E-mail address, your Alias/Furry name (and tell me whether you prefer the Alias or your RL name to appear on your pages), and maybe even a short description/addendum for the head of your author's page,... but none of these are absolutely necessary, just nice to have, and they allow your slobbering fans to send you nice e-mails/money/wanna-yiffs ;-) (Btw, note, that if you give me an e-mail but do not specify it as being public, list it on your homepage, or otherwise make it clear it is your public address, it'll not wind up on your author's page, though I may use for private correspondence to you. Also note that if you prefer not to have your address listed, but instead give me an URL where contact info can be found, I can set that up accordingly (see MegaDog's page to see what I'm talking about).

For good public archive sites to place your stories, see Question 4 below.

A final word of caution (I used to think mentioning this was unnecessary, but events have proved otherwise). You may want to check the Index for your story before submitting it, it may already be in there (Especially if you submitted it to one of the sites that make it a point to keep me up to date on their stories, such as for example Furry Pleasures does)).

  2. I have a Homepage, why should I bother putting my story on a public site instead of just on my Homepage ?

<sigh> RL is sometimes unkind to us, some of you may in the near future loose your homepage, loose your access, or even (though I hope not) loose your life. In that sad event, wouldn't you be happy that at least something you wrote stayed behind to continue to spread enjoyment to those who come after you ? Now you know why I'm glad for every story that is archived on a public archive site instead of a homepage. Please take the time.

  3. Can you put a story on a public archive site for me ?

Yes I can, if you so request. I'm in contact with several admins of public servers. But please, if you're able to, try yourself first. If you must, don't forget to specify explicitly that the story is yours, and you request that I place it on a public archive site (not just on my page, there's a difference !), as this constitutes redistributing a story, and I won't do that without explicit permission of the author. Note that I will probably submit your story to the appropriate archive by forwarding your e-mail, I mention this only because there is a INET rule saying that private e-mail shouldn't be forwarded to others without their permission, and thus I'm warning you that by sending me those stories you've given me that permission.

  4. What public archive sites are available, how do I contact them ?

I don't want to imply that any site is better than the others in this list, so they are ordered alphabetically.

This list is also not meant to be exhaustive, there are other servers out there (have a look at my homepage for some other servers, especially in the 'Servers' subsection). If you're an admin of one and want it listed here. just drop me some e-mail with the appropriate data.

  5. Can you review my story and give me feedback ?

Again, my time is short, and the list of stories I have to read for the Index is long and growing longer as you read this (by now, they seem to be coming faster than I can keep up, which is nice, but a problem ;-) Thus, I cannot give feedback for every story I read. I will give feedback in a few cases, especially for the ones with a triangle, but it'll be only for a few stories if at all, so don't depend on it. Instead, there IS a better alternative. Have a look at the Furry Literature Mailing List which was created specifically for the purpose of giving reviews and feedback for budding furry writers.

  6. What is that spinning triangle/frowning face/sphere beside my story/name, and how do I get one ?

Those are my own rating system for stories. If, in my own opinion, a story is not only good, but so good as to distinguish itself from all the rest of the stories and become 'the best of the best' so to speak, it gets that spinning triangle. Similarly, a story that manages to be written in a moronic style, have serious flaws and/or piss me off will get the frowning face. Though luckily, only one story has managed to hit this rock basement of worthlessness (IMHO). The rest of the ratings are explained above.

If an author manages to write several stories that I find worthy of the triangle (or seldomly, a long story containing several substories that I would have rated a triangle by themselves), without writing too many I found only mediocre to bad, he or she will get that triangle beside hir name in the authors list. These constitute the authors that I really like, and whose stories I will not hesitate to recommend.

If an author hasn't written enough stories worth the triangle, but still tends to write well, sie will get the 'good' rating, this doesn't mean the rating cannot increase with time as I see more stories by that author (or decrease if that is the case). I will usually not give author ratings without having seen a large sample of output. As with all the ratings, this is just my opinion, Your mileage may vary.

  7. What Format should the story be in ?

While I will take stories in any format, there are a few I prefer. This being a WWW Index, HTML is of course the format of choice. It has the added advantage that most browsers will reformat HTML Text to fit properly into anybody's screen no matter how wide (within reason), thus making scrolling back and forth unnecessary. Also, while there is no generally accepted standard on how to show national characters in ASCII (or too many such standards, depending how you look at it), there is such a standard for HTML, making it easy to insert things such as ä, ¥, ©, or µ into text.

Plain ASCII text is also possible, though if you use it, please format your text to a line width of 72 chars or shorter, so it can be shown on regular screens without undue wrapping. Hint: It's relatively easy to format Plain ASCII into HTML (so why not have a try ? ;-).

While there are other formats such as RTF, Word Document, EBCDIC and such, not everyone can read them, and thus they are not formats I recommend (though I WILL include stories written in such formats). If at all possible, reformat such files to one of the two above. If you wish, I can add pointers to the original version beside the reformatted one (I'll need the URL's for that to happen though ;-)

  8. My story is a bit risqué, do you mind ?

As stated in Reader Question 13 I will accept any and all story that is anthropomorphic, regardless of other content. But don't worry, I have probably read (and enjoyed) worse than you wrote (don't think of that as a challenge though), so go ahead and submit it.

  9. My story is not a yiff story, do you mind ?

Like I said, I will accept anthropomorphic stories regardless of other content. Now quit thinking I make value judgements on this and start sending me that URL ;-)

  10. I've written a furry story, but it's not too good, would you be interested anyhow?

For one, this is an Index of all furry and anthropomorphic stories on the net. While I may state my opinion on a story, I will never censor it by refusing it a place in this listing, I will leave that up to my readers, who may decide to ignore a story or read it at their own leisure. Thus, your story, no matter how bad or good will be welcome in the Index.

Secondly, there are already quite a few stories on the Index that I feel are a waste of good diskspace (no, I will not name them here, but let me just point out that this is just purely my personal feeling here, which I will not expect anyone else to share), so one more won't harm anything. And who knows, I may like it more than you think. In fact, I've noticed a pronouced tendency for authors to evaluate their stories incorrectly as to how much I or their audience liked them.

At any rate, to get back to the topic at hand, all I require of a story for it to be indexed here is that it be at least marginally anthropomorphic, and that it be available to the WWW, and I've even made some exceptions to those rules on occasion (but only to accept a story, never to deny it).

  11. Can I help you get the Story indexed as fast as possible ?

Well, it's not necessary, but especially when reporting several stories at once, using the following layout will help us enter data as quick as possible (leave out any lines you don't have info for, or that don't apply, but use this exact sequence of information otherwise, one to a line except for comments):

followed by one or more of:

And that should help us work it in ;-)
